Engineering Manager
Job purpose
- Engineering – Responsible for all the engineering assets and Infrastructure throughout the Railway.
- Safety – Ensure safe working processes & develop a positive safety culture throughout the Railway.
- People – Lead and manage the engineering team to deliver projects in a timely fashion.
- Maintenance – High standard of maintenance for assets and infrastructure with record keeping that complies with the Safety Management System.
- Development – Future work practices, facilities, and opportunities to develop the engineering team.
Duties and responsibilities
Safety
- Health and safety on Pendre engineering site including fire safety and evacuation procedures.
- Responsible for the Health and Safety of engineering activities and otherwise as required by the Safety Management System.
- Manage on-site contractors and provide safety management briefing & permit to work on arrival to the site.
- Manage safe working practices and method statements are in place, are adhered to and are regularly reviewed and developed.
- Manage risk assessments, review and update and communicate with team members.
- Assist General Manager Operations with Health & Safety meetings.
- Ensure compliance with Statutory legislation.
People
- Management of workshop and fitting, track/outdoor, electrical, S & T employees, together with volunteers & apprentices.
- Motivation of team, time management, annual leave, attendance, and review of performance through the appraisal process and beyond.
- Ensure training is identified, carried out & encouraged.
Maintenance
- Responsibility for the inspection, maintenance, and renewal of locomotives, rolling stock, permanent way, road vehicles, plant machinery, and infrastructure.
- To liaise with volunteers including work allocation as appropriate.
- Efficient job planning and work allocation that meets with the priorities of the railway.
- Asset records and maintenance schedules stored electronically and kept up to date.
- Financial management of budget, tight controls on stock ordering.
- Develop & implement planned preventative maintenance schedules.
Development
- Future development of workshops, engineering site and equipment.
- Keep up to date with advances & improvements in workshop equipment.
- Maintain relationship with other Heritage Railways to benchmark & ensure best practice.
- Encourage innovation.
- Business growth – Actively participate in the railways strategy & charitable objectives.
Other
- Effective cost control.
- Attend Company Boards, and Society Council meetings and Sub-committees if required.
- Any other duties as directed and as required commensurate with the post.
Person Specification
Essential
- Essential to hold an appropriate qualification.
- Strong and effective management, supervisory and leadership skills – A minimum of 5 years in a similar position.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational & planning skills.
Desirable
- Relevant Engineering experience.
- Knowledge of heritage railways.
Salary
- £36,000 per annum or by negotiation.
- 38 hour week, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays when necessary.
- 22 days paid leave, plus bank holidays
